New Year

History

All over the world January 1st is celebrated as the New Year’s Day but it was not the same even few hundred years back. Around 153 BC as per the Gregorian calendar, the Romans initiated the concept of New Year as January1st.

According to many scholars, around 4000 years ago in ancient Babylon, people first started celebrating the New Year’s Day on January 1st marked by the first new moon after the Vernal Equinox. It was accepted by mostly Christian countries during the early Medieval Era.

With time other countries started adopting the same. For example the Germans adopted the concept in 1700, Great Britain in 1752, and Sweden in 1753. The Oriental countries gradually adopted the same along with their own calendars. In 1873 Japan accepted it and in 1912 China welcomed the new calendar.
