Symbols

Halloween is mostly based on spooky folk tales, centering on the supernatural powers and beliefs of the other world where the spirits of the dead lives. It is the time of magic and superstitions. Since time immemorial people started relating the witches, vampires, black cats, bats, spiders and ghost with this festival. Some of the symbols are given below:

  • Bats:

They are nocturnal mammals that feed on small insects but have a bad reputation because of the vampire bats which suck blood from its victims. With time, bats represent the dark evil side of the night and people often keep their pockets inside out to protect themselves from bats. One superstition that still prevails is if a bat fly around a house three times on Halloween then, a death in that house is inevitable.

  • Jack O Lantern:

The tradition of Jack O’ Lantern originated from the Irish folk tale Stingy Jack. And people carve on pumpkins and place them near their houses to drive him away.

  • Black Cats:

Black cats are related to witches and witch crafts. They are often believed to be the incarnations of dead souls.

  • Witches and Vampires:

It is believed that the witches possess powers that can communicate with the evil with their black magic. For many the age old characterizations have not faded, like an old crone with moles riding on a broomstick and casting on the children with their evil spells. Many believe in the superstition that to see a witch flying across the night one must wear clothes inside out and walk outside backwards at midnight on this day.

It is believed that on this day, the vampires come out to suck blood from its innocent victims.
