  • 1 (1" thick) Dowel rod
  • Saw
  • Drill (optional)
  • Sandpaper
  • Red paint
  • Blue paint
  • White paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Glue
  • 6" Twine
  • 1 piece of Ribbon
How To Make It
  1. Cut dowel rod into 3 pieces (6", 5", 4" or whatever lengths you prefer).
  2. If you have a drill, drill down in one end of each dowel piece about 1/4". (if not skip steps 2 and 6, and glue the twine end down on top)
  3. Sand the dowel rods ends, rounding slightly if desired.
  4. Paint your dowel rods with the red, white, and blue paint with patriotic designs. Let dry.
  5. Cut the twine into 3 (2") pieces.
  6. Apply a spot of glue into the end of each dowel rod that has a hole drilled in it. Push one end of the twine in the hole. Let dry.
  7. After the project is dry, tie all three "firecrackers" together and stand up on end.

STAR CLOCK
Materials Needed
  • Paper mache star-shaped box with lid
  • Liquitex Gesso White
  • Paintbrush
  • Navy blue craft paint
  • Red craft paint
  • 4 Small Woodsies Stars (or any wooden stars)
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Clockworks
  • Small screwdriver
  • Hot glue gun and sticks

Instructions

  1. Use the small screwdriver to punch a hole where the clockworks will come through the front of the clock. Before you punch the hole, put the clock works inside the clock and mark where you will punch the hole. Do it fairly close to the center of the star.
  2. Paint the whole box and the 4 wooden stars with Liquitex Gesso White paint.
  3. Allow the box and stars to dry overnight.
  4. Paint the lid of the box and the bottom of the box with navy blue craft paint. Leave the sides white for now.
  5. Let the blue paint dry.
  6. Draw stripes on the sides of the box with a pencil and a ruler. Paint every other one with red craft paint and leave the others white.
  7. Hot glue the stars to the front of the clock (bottom of the box) where the 12, 3, 6, and 9 of the clock will be located. See photo so you know what the position of the stars are.
  8. With white Liquitex Gesso, paint the marks between the wooden stars where the other hours are located.
  9. Place the lid back on the box. Set the box on its side so that you can read the clock clearly and place it where you want!
Note: If you want to hang the clock you will need to remove the lid.

FLAG FAN
Materials Needed
  • Navy blue corrugated plastic
  • White corrugated plastic
  • Red "Painters" paint marker
  • White "Painters" paint marker
  • Extremely sharp scissors
  • Popsicle stick
  • Pen or pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scotch brand super strength Mounting Tape
  • Tacky glue
Instructions
  1. Measure and cut a rectangle 5" wide x 3 1/2" tall out of the white corrugated plastic.
Note: Make sure that the ribs (interior lines) on the white corrugated plastic are vertical so that you can put the Popsicle stick through it when you are finished.
  2. Measure and cut a rectangle 2" wide x 1 1/2" tall out of the navy blue corrugated plastic.
  3. Draw white stars on the navy blue corrugated plastic. (Tip: If you mess up, turn the plastic over and write on the other side)
  4. Using your pen or pencil, measure in 1/4" increments down the white corrugated cardboard to make the stripes.
  5. Draw red stripes on the white corrugated cardboard. (see photo)
  6. Let the markers dry for about 10 minutes (depending on humidity).
  7. Attach the navy blue corrugated plastic with the stars on the upper left corner of the flag with the mounting tape. (see photo)
  8. Using your sharp scissors, cut up a small way on the inside of the white corrugated plastic to make it easier to insert the Popsicle stick.
  9. Add tacky glue to the end of the stick and push up inside the tomato.
  10. Enjoy your really cool fan!

Note: You can use hot glue if you are wanting the project to dry immediately for the child to use. If using tacky glue, allow to dry overnight.
