The origin of Destiny's Child dates back to the time when its group members Beyonce Knowles and LaTavia Roberson were just nine years old. Later in 1992 Kelly Rowland too joined the group, followed by Luckett in the very next year. Knowles' father became their manager and made earnest efforts for their success. Gaining local success was very easy for them because they could easily charm people with their street cool image and impressive vocal harmonies.
In 1997 they were signed to Columbia Records but this was not what they were waiting for. Their big break came when the track "Killing Time" appeared on The Men In Black soundtrack. Their self-titled debut, released in 1998, featured collaborations with leading R&B/hip-hop producers
Timbaland, R. Kelly, Wyclef Jean and Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott. They hit the top chart with the track "No No No" which went as hiigh as US and UK Top 10 chart. This was followed by one hit after another which includes "With Me" and "Get On The Bus".
The group came with their second album "The Writing's On The Wall" which was premiered by "Bills, Bills, Bills". This track gave them the opportunity to reach the US chart-topper in July 1999, and also reached the UK Top 10. Farrah Franklin and Michelle Williams joined the group in February 2000 to replace the departing Roberson and
Luckett. They attempted to split with manager Matthew Knowles, charging that he kept a disproportionate share of the band's profits, attempted to exert too much control, and unfairly favored his daughter and niece. After a month the troop once again reached the US Hot 100 with "Say My Name". This was the time when the troop had to encounter a number of problems like the departure of Franklin but this did not deter them from giving hits.
Misfortune struck the group, in late July 1999. A stalker by the name of LaToya Langford, started harassing the band which prevented them to take trips to San Diego. But after her arrest finally on August 23, 1999 the group safely came out of hiding and now reduced to a trio. Destiny's Child was tapped to record the theme song for the film version of Charlie's Angels; released as a single in October, "Independent Women, Pt. 1" raced up the charts and spent an astounding 11 consecutive weeks at number one. Destiny's Child were definitely by now the superstars. In the meantime, Destiny's Child won 2 Grammy awards for "Say My Name," including Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and Best R&B Song.
By now Beyonce Knowles had become the leader of the troop. She took the majoe control in writing the songs and even producing and co-writing the entire album. She definitely did an incredible job. The first two singles, "Survivor" and
"Bootylicious", were predictably huge hits, with the latter becoming the group's fourth No.1 pop single. A cover of Andy Gibb's "Emotion" was also successful, becoming a Top 10 pop hit. Survivor sold well over twelve million copies.
After the release of the third album the troop members decided to carve out their independent careers. In 2002, Beyonce made her acting debut as Foxxy Cleopatra in Austin Powers In
Goldmember, and released the solo single "Work It Out". Rowland branched out into solo work during the same year, enjoying a massive transatlantic hit with "Dilemma", a collaboration with rapper Nelly. Of all the troop member Knowles enjoyed massive solo hits the following year with "Crazy In Love" and the album Dangerously In Love. Despite her appeal on her own, Beyoncé rejoined Kelly and Michelle in 2004 to release another Destiny's Child disc - Destiny Fulfilled
